2024 Elections: Electoral Commission Chairperson Warns Against Misinformation and Disinformation during (IPAC) Meeting.

Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has issued a strong warning against the spread of misinformation and disinformation as Ghana moves closer to the 2024 general elections.

Speaking after a significant Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, she underscored the importance of ensuring that the public receives accurate and truthful information regarding the EC’s role in the electoral process.

Jean Mensa made it clear that the commission does not have the authority to decide the outcome of an election or make any candidate president.

“The EC can never make anybody president and I think that we all know this around this table. Therefore, we should not peddle misinformation, fake news and disinformation and give innocent citizens who do not know the process that the electoral commission can make somebody a president,” she stated.

Jean Mensa reiterated that the EC’s role is solely to declare the results of an election based on the choice of the Ghanaian voters.

“I would like to state on this occasion and quote from Dr Hassan Ayariga that the EC can never make anybody a president. What the EC does is declare who the voters choose as their president.

“So, it is the Ghanaian voter who votes a president into being, it is not the EC that makes a president. We only declare the voters’ choice,” she stated.
