GACC, LANet Sensitize Berekum Residents on Anti-Corruption Crusade as Participants Called on Government to Open Corruption Court.

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), in collaboration with LANet and Citizens Watch Ghana, has sensitized students, market women, traders, artisans and residents of the Berekum East Municipality in the Bono Region on the need to join the fight against corruption.

The sensitization programme, held at the Berekum Trinity Presby Church, introduced participants to practical ways of combating corruption, including the three Rs — Refuse, Reject and Report corruption.

Participants were also educated on the institutions mandated to investigate and deal with corruption-related cases, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Speaking on this year's anti-corruption campaign theme, Mr. Ernest Asante, a co-facilitator from the Ghana Education Service, urged residents to be bold and willing to report suspected acts of corruption.

He said the fight against corruption was a collective responsibility and therefore required the commitment of all citizens because corruption has the potential to undermine national development.

He called on the students to prepared their mind to shun corruption whenever they fall play to it especially in their exams and other areas of their lives.

Mr. Simon Asore, the LANet focal person for the Berekum East Municipality, encouraged participants to share the knowledge acquired with others, stressing that the fight against corruption was a shared responsibility.

He urged citizens to actively report and speak against corruption, assuring them that the Whistleblower Act provides protection for persons who report corruption and corruption-related activities.

Mr. Asore said GACC and its affiliate institutions would continue their anti-corruption campaign and urged residents to join the crusade to ensure that the people of Berekum receive the development they deserve as part of the national cake distribution.

Meanwhile, the Krontihene of Fetentaa, Nana Effah Boakye, has called on the government to institute a special court to deal specifically with corruption-related cases.

Simon Asore

According to him, delays in the prosecution of corruption cases at the traditional courts often result in alleged perpetrators walking free without facing punishment, a situation he said could fail to serve as a deterrent to others.

He therefore appealed to the government to establish a special court to expedite the hearing and determination of corruption-related cases.
