GACC and Berekum LANet Engage Berekum East Assembly Audit Committee On Effective Revenue Mobilization.

GACC and Berekum LANet Engage Berekum East Assembly Audit Committee On Effective Revenue Mobilization.

As part of an effort to strengthen accountability and citizen participation against corruption, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) together with Berekum Local Accountability Network (LANet) has today Thursday 2nd July, 2026 sensitize the general public in their preparedness to help fight and reduce corruption in the public sector.

In line with this, the two entities has engaged the Berekum East Municipal Assembly Audit Committee members in the Bono region to interact with them how they may overcome some infractions of the Assembly that were recorded during the Public Account committee sittings this year.

The GACC Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Mr Solomon Yankah together with the LANet team implored the audit committee to explain how they have manage to implement the recommendation of the public Account committee on revenue mobilization, that, "management should exercise strong oversight on the activities of the collectors to maximize the efficiency of revenue collections."

The audit committee Chairman, Mr. Wemuo Roger explained that, management are working to establish a framework to ensure revenue mobilization shortfalls are reduced and for an effective revenue mobilization, the assembly is planning for an effective data base for proper revenue collections in the Municipality and the cost of data collection is what is hampering the assembly but they are contemplating to initiate it on phases. He said, inadequate data for revenue collectors and fee fixing implementation has become a challenge straining the assembly but management will deal with it.

Mr Wemuo emphasized that, education on revenue mobilization will be enhanced especially to create the understanding among the public on property, business, and market rates to boost the citizens interest on revenue collection.

He added that, the assembly management has plan to rotate and reposition revenue collectors of their stations of revenue mobilization to help reduce any shortfalls the assembly has been experiencing over the years though the collectors are the major challenge since most of them have been mechanized and have become permanent staff so they don't work based on commission to be tasked with targets yet last year's revenue was higher than that of 2024.

Berekum LANet focal person, Mr Simon Azure encouraged the audit committee members to ensure proper data is collected in the municipality to avoid little revenue collection for the running of the assembly's administrative drive for development.

Nana Effah Boakye, Krontihene of Fetentaa and Chairman for Berekum LANet also stressed that, the assembly must ensure there is a collaboration between them and the local bodies who matters in revenue contributions to partner them in support of revenue mobilization so that the assembly may not lose their expected revenue target.

The CSO's after the meeting promised they will recommend to the higher authorities to also support the assembly to run town hall meetings and educational programs to broadening the knowledge of the citizens to boost their interest in revenue contributions.

In conclusion, the assembly assured through the Coordinating Director that, "what took them to the public Account committee will never happen again going forward."
