 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

RE: CONDEMNATION OF INCITEFUL AND RECKLESS STATEMENTS BY HON. OKYERE BAAFI (MP FOR KOFORIDUA) AGAINST THE ASHANTI PEOPLE AND THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (NDC).

The attention of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Professional Forum Youth Commission has been drawn to a deeply unfortunate and reckless statement allegedly made by Hon. Okyere Baafi, Member of Parliament for Koforidua, on Angel FM, in which he sought to incite the good people of the Ashanti Region against the NDC in relation to recent power outages.

We wish to state, in no uncertain terms, that such comments are not only irresponsible but also dangerous to the peace, unity, and democratic stability of our nation. It is highly regrettable that an individual entrusted with the title of “Honourable Member of Parliament” would descend to such a low level of public discourse by peddling unverified claims and inflammatory narratives.

The assertion that the NDC harbors ill intentions towards the people of Ashanti—particularly the outrageous claim that the party is deliberately disrupting electricity supply to harm residents—is not only false but also a calculated attempt to create fear, tension, and division among Ghanaians.

We categorically reject any narrative suggesting that the people of the Ashanti Region are opposed to the NDC or vice versa. The NDC has a long-standing record of inclusive governance and development projects that have benefited all regions of Ghana, including Ashanti. The people of Ashanti remain an integral part of our national fabric, and their welfare continues to be a priority to the NDC.

We urge all public office holders to exercise restraint, responsibility, and decorum in their public utterances. Freedom of speech must not be abused as a tool for incitement, misinformation, or political mischief. Leadership demands maturity, truthfulness, and a firm commitment to national cohesion.

Furthermore, we call on the appropriate state and security agencies to act swiftly in investigating such statements and holding individuals accountable where necessary. Ghana’s peace and unity must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.

We also remind the general public that the use of inflammatory language and deliberate falsehoods has the potential to destabilize the country and undermine our democratic progress. This must not be tolerated.

The NDC remains committed to peace, unity, and development across all regions of Ghana. We encourage all citizens to remain calm and to reject divisive rhetoric.

SIGNED

Benjamin Afram Kwabena

Deputy National Youth Commissioner

NDC Professional Forum.
