Berekum Leaders Demonstrates Against Illegal Mining (Galamsay).


The resident and the people of Berekum East Municipal of the Bono region has today 23rd April, 2026 demonstrated to register their displeasure against illegal mining activities in the area.


According to the traditional leaders, Berekum has a very small landscape and cannot compromise with the natural resources found on their land to be destroyed by illegal mining.


The demonstration lead by some members of the divisional chiefs among other concern citizens of Berekum both Ghana and abroad took to the street holding placards with inscription like "Berekum is Not ready to import drinking water, Galamsey Poisons our soil with cyanide, Galamsayers are Vampires, Destruction of our lands is the greatest injustice to the unborn generation" expressed their pleasure about galamsay activities that want to come to the area.

Presenting the petition on behalf of the demonstrators to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East, Osaberima Kwabena Diawuo Owusu II explained that, Berekum was not fortunate to have a vast land and if they allow the water bodies to be destroyed, the generation unborn will be affected with the hazardous chemicals of illegal mining activities and the environment will be degraded.

Receiving the petition, MP of Berekum East, Hon. Simon Amparbeng Kyeremeh assured the people that, he will ensure that, the petition will be addressed and direct to the appropriate quarters for instructions against the illegal mining.

He said, if they have anything to do, they will only accept proper and responsible mining where a mining company will be granted the permit to mine properly to provide employment to the youth in the area but cannot entertain illegal mining.

25-Year-Old Young Man Electrocuted in Berekum . A suspected thief by the name Oboshie in his 25 years has been electrocuted at Berekum Nyamebekyere in the Berekum East Municipal of the Bono region . According to eye-witnesses, the suspected thief's lifeless body was found on the food vendor metal container as he attempted to steal from the container of the vendor who operates in a metal container. His death attracted a crowd of the Berekum people to the scene on the street of Nyamebekyere as everyone wants to catch a glimpse of the deceased over the incident of frequent robbery attacks and stealing in the Municipality.
