PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, 30TH MARCH 2026.

UPDATE ON RENT CARD ISSUANCE DIRECTIVE AND COMPLIANCE MEASURES.

The Rent Control Department wishes to inform the general public, particularly landlords and tenants, that following
the issuance of the initial directive on the mandatory provision of rent cards by landlords to their tenants, extensive
engagement have been held with landlord associations and other key stakeholders.

In view of this constructive feedback received and the commitment demonstrated by stakeholders, the directive
schedule to take effective on April 1st, which would have restricted services to landlords who fail to issue rent cards,
has been temporarily put on hold until May 1st.

The Department takes this opportunity to express its sincere appreciation to all landlords who have complied with
the directive and those who continue to visit Rent Control offices to acquire and issue rent cards.

This positive
response reflects a shared commitment to transparency, accountability, and improved landlord-tenant relations.
The Rent Control Department further wishes to remind both landlords and tenants of their legal obligation to register
all tenancy agreement within two weeks of execution, in accordance with SECTION 4 of the Rent Control Law
(PNDC Law 138 1968).

This requirement is essential to ensuring proper documentation, protection of rights, and
effective dispute resolution.
Failure to comply with this provision constitutes an offence under the law and may attract appropriate sanctions and
penalties as prescribed.

The Department encourages all stakeholders to take advantage of this extension period to regularize their
documentation and ensure full compliance ahead of the revised enforcement date.
For further information or assistance, the public is encouraged to visit the nearest Rent Control Office.

Signed
OFFICE
OF THE RENT COMMISSIONER,

Frederick Opoku
Ag. Rent Commissioner
