Akwatia By-Election, NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo Recaptures Seat for NDC.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the keenly contested Akwatia by-election, securing a crucial seat for the government.
According to certified results from the Electoral Commission, Baidoo polled 18,199 votes out of the 33,819 valid ballots cast. His closest contender, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed only 82 votes. A total of 303 ballots were rejected.
The by-election became necessary following the death of the late MP, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. Campaigning was fierce, with both the NDC and NPP deploying heavy resources and manpower in their quest to capture the mining-rich constituency.
Speaking after his victory, Baidoo expressed confidence that his win was never in doubt despite doubts from some quarters. “I was very aware and confident that I would win the election. Whatever people thought about me losing the seat never made me lose focus.”
He thanked the people of Akwatia for the trust reposed in him and promised to prioritize development. “As this area is known for mining, I will ensure responsible mining that creates employment for our youth and brings sustainable growth,” he assured.
