Suhum MTTD Educates Okada Riders on Safety and Regulation.
In a proactive move to address safety concerns and prepare for the potential legalization of their business, the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Lydia Ohenewa Sarah, has collaborated with the Suhum Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to educate commercial motor riders, popularly known as "Okada" riders.
The engagement, which included the leadership of the Okada Riders Union of Ghana, aimed to bring all riders together and inform them about the government's plans.
According to MCE Lydia Ohenewa Sarah, speaking with news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, said the meeting was crucial to foster a sense of unity among riders, similar to other driver unions. She explained that joining the union would provide riders with opportunities to improve their services and gain valuable training for a better working experience. The union would also serve as a collective voice for the riders in their dealings with the government, particularly concerning safety and the acquisition of riding licenses. Hon. Sarah also revealed that the leadership of the Okada Riders Union is currently touring various regions in Ghana to prepare riders for the importance of joining the union.
Representatives from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ghana Police Service were present to educate riders on adhering to required safety protocols. Following the educational session, membership cards were issued to participating riders within the Suhum Municipality.
The Suhum Police Commander, DSP Samuel Korang, speaking with Alrich24newsgh.blogspot.com news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, urged the riders to obtain their licenses, roadworthy certificates, and insurance before operating on the road. He also stressed the importance of wearing protective gear, including helmets, to prevent fatalities in the event of an accident. DSP Korang reiterated that having a valid license would help riders avoid being arrested.
The leadership of the Okada Riders Union expressed their gratitude to the MTTD for the educational program, stating that it would contribute to their safety and help address other operational issues. They also advised their fellow riders to stay away from substance abuse, such as tramadol and other drugs, to prevent road accidents
