UENR poised to make Bono Region an IT Hub - Dr. Peter Appiahene.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is poised to make the Bono Region an Information Technology (IT) hub, according to Dr. Peter Appiahene, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences.


Dr. Appiahene expressed the university's commitment to providing skilled education and training students in IT, enabling them to solve real-world problems and contribute to the region's development. 


He highlighted the department's strengths, citing its track record of producing talented students who have gone on to secure notable employment and develop innovative projects.


The Department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences (ITDS) at t UENR is set to host its 4th Annual Tech Fair 2025, themed "Innovate and Elevate: Empowering the Youth to Pioneer Digitalization, the Role of Stakeholders." 


This year’s Tech Fair, scheduled from July 28th to August 1st, 2025, will bring together notable attendees, including the Minister of Communication and Technology and Parliament committee members on Communication, Bono Regional Minister, MPs, MMDCs, and other invited dignitaries.


During a media engagement on Friday at UENR, the IT department and the event organisers unveiled the 2025 Tech Fair Official song and event flyer, along with a lineup of activities. 


Additionally, the department briefed the press on the program and requested active participation in promoting the event.

Dr. Peter Appiahene, Head of the ITDS department, emphasized the department's goal to expand beyond the classroom and university community and the Bono to become a globally recognized technology hub. 


He highlighted past successes, including alumni securing notable employment and developing innovative mobile apps. 


Mr. Appiahene emphasized that the department aims to enhance students' capacity to solve technological problems through digital literacy programs, research projects, and collaborations with tech institutions.


According to him, the Tech Fair will showcase innovative projects, such as an AI mobile app for brain tumour segmentation and an app for visually impaired individuals to use social media. 


He told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark fm that students will have opportunities to connect with company owners and entrepreneurs for potential job opportunities. 


Dr. Appiahene encouraged students and youth to pursue ICT education to gain employment and the government's one million coding programme.


The UENR IT students' association president, Abdulai Adjei Zakaria, called on the government to provide an IT lab and improve network infrastructure in Sunyani, citing poor internet services that sometimes disrupt their academic activities. 


He urged the sector minister to address the intermittent telecommunications network challenges to boost internet access.
