Abuakwa North YEA Office Power Disconnected Plunged into Darkness Over GHC 5,500 Debt.
The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) office in Abuakwa North has been left without electricity for several days after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected power over an outstanding debt of GHC 5,500. The power cut, which stems from a seven-year-old unpaid bill, has brought all office operations to a standstill, raising concerns about the agency's ability to fulfill its mandate of addressing youth unemployment.
Mr. Edmond Kwaku Dua, the newly appointed YEA Director for Abuakwa North, expressed his dismay upon resuming office to find it plunged into darkness. As I resume office today there is no electricity, everything is basa in the office, no single computer in the office, he lamented. The lack of power has rendered all equipment unusable, effectively paralyzing the office's ability to serve the public.
In response to the dire situation, Mr. Dua has issued an urgent appeal to authorities and stakeholders to assist in settling the outstanding electricity bill. He also highlighted the urgent need for renovation of the office building, urging individuals and organizations to come to their aid.
Despite the immediate challenges, Mr. Dua remains optimistic about the future of youth employment in Ghana. He expressed strong belief that the proposed 24-hour economy roadmap and policy document will significantly contribute to reducing unemployment rates in the short term. Speaking with Alrich24newsgh.blogspot.com news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, the Director emphasized the potential for massive job creation.
"Once we are able to do it, you can think of the number of employment opportunities that we can create for the youth of this country.
So that is another way of tackling youth unemployment in the medium term," Mr. Dua stated, referring to the estimated 140,000 young people who enter the Ghanaian labor market annually after graduation.
A statement released by the YEA further underscored the positive implications of such initiatives, particularly the private sector's role in supporting the President's "One Million Jobs Agenda" and the YEA's broader efforts to combat youth unemployment in Ghana.
The YEA Job Fair 2025 is expected to be a key component in rolling out this ambitious plan.
