Dedewa River Death Trap: Residents Cry for Concrete Bridge.
Residents of Dedewa and Govinakrom in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region are appealing to the government to replace a wooden footbridge over the Dedewa River that has become a death trap with a concrete bridge.
Some of them speaking with Alrich24newsgh.com news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, the residents explained that they normally have to carry pregnant women in labour, especially in the wooden structure made to cross the river, and also walk miles kilometres to the next town Govinakrom, before they could access to the health care.
And in most cases, they said some of the pregnant women died on the way before reaching healthcare facilities, they said.
Mr Robert Amevor, Unit Committee Member of Dedewa, who spoke to the news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel in an interview during a visit to the community said, the place is a farming community and this situation has been with them for decades.
He said politicians came to them every four years to campaign for their votes yet nothing had been done to address their plight.
As l speak to you now, the population is over 1000 residents living in this community, there is no electricity in the area, no school, children walk to cross this river every day before going to school in the Govinakrom, he stressed.
That, Mr Robert said, was affecting children's education in those communities. We have complained to the authorities to come to our aid but nothing concrete has been done, Mr Robert stated.
He added that the poor road network was also negatively impeding economic activities in those communities as residents had difficulty in transporting their farm produce to other communities for sale.
Mr Robert Amevor expressed worry over the Dedewa River bridge, which he said was dangerous, adding that the problem could only be solved if a new bridge was constructed, and the road network issues tackled.
He therefore accused the Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Panin, of of selling their lands to private companies claiming the lands is for Okyeman, and destroying their farms including, Orange, Oil palm Plantation, Plantain, Cassava and Maize farms.
