PEOPLE OF NSOATRE CALLS FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS TO BE FIX IN THE TOWN.

Samuel Kusi Twum from Nsoatre in the SunyaninWest Municipal of the Bono Region has shared his experience at a time vehicles were knocking people and school children on the Sunyani-Berekum highway.

History of Nsoatre Speed Ramps.

It was a saturday morning somewhere in 2003, after I refused going to farm with my mum and found myself playing table tennis beside the famous odo rice joint in Nsoatre. Before my very eyes, a little girl of around 10yrs had attempted to cross the road and have been knocked down by a taxi moving with top speed from Berekum heading to Sunyani. That was the third time in the same week someone got knocked down by cars passing through the town.

A guy at the time in his late 20s started blocking the road with stones, wood and any other thing he could find. The people had had enough and they wanted authorities to act to stop this rising incidence of accident. The police and MTTU had failed them so they decided to be radical. Standing by the road side then, the young boys called on us to help which we all heeded and joined the road block. Soon no car could move through the town and there was a huge traffic more than the famous kasoa traffic in the country.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the then defence minister Hon. Addo Kuffour together with the then IGP were attending a funeral in Berekum or Dormaa and their convoy had been stopped on the highway due to the demonstration. The two got down, walked miles to where the activity was happening, gathered the masses and assured them that, by 8am on Monday, Highway Authority will be in the town to fix speed ramps to curb the over speeding that is resulting in the killing of road users.

After about 5hrs of intensed demonstration, the people agreed to clear the road and allow it's usage.

As promised by then Hon. Addo Kuffour and the IGP by 6am on the next Monday, workers had started fixing the speed ramps. Everything returned to normalcy and the road became safe for pedestrians at Nsoatre.

Why Traffic Lights Now.

After 18 years of having speed ramps in the town to prevent accidents, the speed ramps on the Nsoatre town have faded and drivers are back on speed with their cars through the town. The lives of pedestrians have been put back in danger. If not checked, history may repeat itself and things could be much worse.

I therefore proposed that since speed ramps are boring and in itself course accidents, i believe we can resort to the use of technology to regulate drivers along this route.

The Nsoatre highway has two four junctions. One at Ohene Junction (before you enter town's market) and Information junction (almost at the center of the town). It will therefore be appropriate to mount traffic lights at these two junctions which will be more effective in regulating over speeding and also bring orderless on the road.

I therefore call on Ghana Police and the Ghana Highway Authority to consider this proposal and if found meritable, implement it as soon as possible.  I'm available  for any kind of engagement on this matter.

Best Regards!
