ANOTHER THEFT HIT GRIDCo SUBSTATION IN BEREKUM AS POWER CABLES CUT AWAY BY THIEVES.
Bearly two months old GRIDCo substation that was constructed by Skipper Ghana Limited (SkipperSeil) an Indian Company in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region which distributes electricity power to the people of Berekum, Dormaa Ahenkro, Nkrankwanta, Wamfie, Drobo, Japekrom, Sampa and other surrounding towns have been affected by different kinds of thefts leading to the gradual collapse of the operations of the substation. The latest and serious robbery that has hit the substation is that, thieves have entered the yard and cut off the power cables of the standby M15 Transformer at the substation.
According to the information Alrich24newsgh.com has gathered, the substation have only one security man guiding the place during the day and two in the night but the robbers managed to run away with some of the heavy cables and coppers around the standby M15 Transformer.
In reference to stealings of just two months old substation, another thefts were recorded last month which 16 protective copper cables along the towers of GRIDCo transmission line from Sunyani to Berekum were also stolen.
The situation has become very disturbing because it appears robbers and theives don't want the newly constructed Berekum GRIDCo substation project to be in operational to help reduce power fluctuations in Berekum and it's surrounding areas.
Some members of the Berekum Municipal Security Committee led by the Berekum Municapal Police Commander, Chief Supritendent Nicolas Opare Ofosu-Hene in the absence of the Berekum Municipal MCE, Hon. Kofi Adjei have visited the scene to inspect it and access the situation today 17th April 2019 . The commander therefore revealed the police preparedness to investigate into the matter to bring the perpetrators to book. He said, together with his team of police officers, a complete investigation will be conducted to find out the possible means to end the situation at the substation.
The Indian contractors, SkipperSeil who undertook the construction works are complaining bitterly about the situation because a new cables have to be replaced with a huge cost amounting to millions of dollars.
