BEREKUM YOUTH PROVE THEIR CITIZENSHIP POWER BUT NOT SPECTATORS OVER POOR SERVICES OF NEDCo, VRA AND GRIDCo.
The youth of Berekum in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region on Monday 4th February, 2019 embarked on a demonstration to agitate for the reasons of poor services being rendered by NEDCo, VRA and GRIDCo. This was as a result of power outage for three days in the area.
A group of Berekum youth numbering about 60 to 80 besieged the office of the Berekum branch of the NEDCo to enquire from the manager, Mr Eric Ofori the reason for the power outages for the past 3 days.
The manger upon seeing the angry youth ran for his life to Berekum Divisional Police Headquarters for protection. The angry youth followed him to the police Headquarters. The timely intervention of the police saved the man from being lyunched by the youth. In place of his life, they deflated the tires of the NEDCo vehicle the manger was driving as at the time he went to the police Headquarters.
Speaking to Alrich24newsgh.com some of the people explained that for the past 3 days till Monday, 4th of February, 2019, they have not got water to bath because of no electrical power , cold store operators have suffered losses with huge debts because of power outages and people can't get electricity power for their businesses.
According to the youth, until the power is restored nobody will leave the police Headquarters.
It took the Berekum police a lot of time to calm the people. The Municipal Police Commander Chief Supritendent Nicholas Opare Ofosu-Hene assured the youth during the demonstration that, the power will be restored by 1:00pm and true to his word the power was restored at exactly 12:30pm in the Monday afternoon which helped dispersed the crowd from any further disturbances at the Divisional Police Headquarters..
The youth demonstration against NEDCo compelled the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander DCOP Owusu Boateng together with his Public Relations Officer to visit Berekum to access the situation.
The Municipal Police Commander said they are all happy to see peace restored to enable NEDCo and GRIDCo to continue with their work. He therefore assured the youth to remain calm as everything is on cause to ensure proper stabilization of electrical power in.
The Cooperates Affairs Manager of NEDCo Mr Kotoka Maxwell also added that it is not a planned thing not to supply power to the people of Berekum but rather, there is a real issue that need to be tackled.
He called on the youth of Berekum to be calm as the construction of the substation will soon be completed for them to restore full power supply.
He urged all their customers to bear with them since they are there to serve them.
