BEREKUM TRADITIONAL COUNCIL CALLS INSTITUTIONAL HEADS TO ORDER

BEREKUM TRADITIONAL COUNCIL HOLDS STAKEHOLDERS MEETING WITH CITY AUTHORITIES IN BEREKUM.

The President of the Berekum Traditional Council, Dasebre Dr Amankona Dewuo II together with the Omanhemaa Nana Akosua Ameyaahene III and all the Divisional Chiefs of Berekum Traditional council in the Brong Ahafo Region on Wednesday 6th February 2019 held a stakeholders meeting to summon all the institutional heads within both Berekum Municipal and Berekum West Assemblies respectively to appear before them to brief the traditional council about their various activities at their departments and the resources that goes into them.

The chairman for the meeting, Dasebre Dr Amankona Dewuo II in his welcome speech emphasised on the agenda for the meeting, most importantly on security, sanitation, electricity, road networks and the role of the MP's, Municipal and District Assembly Common Fund and IGF towards development of Berekum.
The meeting first brought to bare the state of Berekum Security which the Nananom implored the Municipal Police Commander, Chief Supritendent Nicolas Opare Ofosu-Hene to brief them the security situation in Berekum.
The Municipal Police Commander responding to the answers of security in Berekum explained that, though many are the issues Nananom have leveled against the police but said, Berekum has enjoyed an atmosphere of  peace for the past years but most of the security matters people complain about are false and they cannot substantiate such allegations.
He said, upon their statistics within the Municipality and that of Berekum West District, no murderer or armed robbery cases have been recorded  from the beginning of this year 2019. He said, every case that comes to them is handled with care and the police are ever ready to combat any crime in Berekum.
He said the police have intensified their night patrols and are prepared to go extra mile if the two Assemblies will support their activities and operations.
Nananom also promised their support to help the police service to provide a parcel of land for the expansion of police stations in Berekum but said Berekum police should work hard to break down all the ghetto bases found in the town and arrest the youth who have been involved in drug abuse in the Municipality.
On the issue of the two MP's Common Fund and their development towards their constituencies, the two MP's for both the Berekum East and West failed to honour the invitation of the Nananom which the Municapal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Kofi Adjei pleaded on their behalf of their absence.

The MCE said the invitation by the Nananom is a right direction to help them abreast themselves with the Berekum Municipal and Berekum West District developmental projects for the year 2019. The MCE explained on the Berekum road networks that, Berekum has been captured in the Sino-Hydro project by the government as well as the secondary city projects to construct 10km and 30km road l respectively within the Municipality. He said, as the assembly is waiting for the central government projects to be commenced, the assembly has graded some roads and also filled and patched some pot holes found in the Municipality as well as the District. He stressed on the Assembly Common Fund and IGF that many are the projects the assembly has done for the Municipality which includes the Construction of educational, health, water and sanitation facilities to boost the living standard of the people in the Municipality. The MCE promised that there are  many developmental projects they have been initiated which will be completed  very soon especially classroom blocks for some selected schools and others.

The meeting saw all the departmental heads including the Northern Electricity Development Cooperation (NEDCo) which the youth of Berekum demonstrated against their services recently. The traditional council requested from NEDCo officials who were present at the gathering to give them an explanation as to what led to the total power outage that occurred last weekend and lasted for 3 days which led to the demonstration of the Berekum youth.
The Cooperate Affairs Manager of NEDCo,  Mr Maxwell Kotoka explaining the recent power outages in Berekum, said the situation has not been their fault because the transmission of electricity power is the work of Ghana Gride Company Limited (GRIDCo) and whenever there is a system failure is not NEDCo but the blame should be directed to GRIDCo.  They are the prime transmitter of electricity power.  So power outages should be apportioned to them but not NEDCo.
He said the construction of a sub-station in Berekum is also a contributory factor to the  power failures.
He said, the project will be completed by the end of this month February 2019 and the electricity power is going to be stable within Berekum and it's environs. He pleaded with the Nananom and the people of Berekum to forgive NEDCo for the interruption of power supply to the people. He said an interim management team has been formed to steer the affairs of Berekum NEDCo Office due to the attack of the supervising manager Mr. Eric Ofori.
The Berekum Municipal Education Director, Mrs Grace Ivy Ameyaw also revealed the performance of the 2018 BECE candidates who took part in the examination, Berekum was adjudged the best in the whole of Brong Ahafo Region. She said a lot of measure have been put in place to make sure the school going children will perform creditably especially in the lower primaries. An early reading classes has been introduced as  morning classes in all the schools in the two Assemblies to upgrade the performance of the children. She therefore appealed to Nananom to come to the aid of the second cycle Schools especially the schools outside Berekum in the daily transportation of the day students to the school.
The relationship between the MP's, MCE and the DCE was another issue that was discussed at the meeting and the traditional council asked the MCE how good he is to the Berekum East MP. He said all the issues have been resolved and they are now in good teems. However, the MP was not present to five his version.
Dasebre Dr Amankona Dewuo II finally concluded that the purpose of the meeting was to help reshape Berekum through the cooperation of the  development agents with Nananom.
