BEREKUM GRIDCO SUB-STATION CONSTRUCTION IS READY FOR USE BY NEDCo
The much-awaited electricity primary sub-station construction which was started about 5 years ago in June, 2014 in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong-Ahafo Region will soon see its completion.
The project, funded by the Ghana Government and being constructed by an Indian company, Skipper Electricals under the supervision of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has reached its final stage of completion.
In a familization encounter with journalists, the Manager, Technical Operations of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), Mr. Charles Dzikunu assured the public that, Berekum will soon operate its own primary sub-station from where it will be further distributing energy to other areas like Wamfie, Dormaa Ahenkro, Nkrankwanta, Sampa, Drobo, Japekrom, and other surrounding towns.
According to him, this will boost the voltage levels and overall quality and reliability of electricity supply in these areas, the obvious effect of which will be a strengthened power base to boost industry and businesses.
He said the new 161KV Sub-station will soon be commissioned and the load from the listed areas, transferred onto it. He explained that all the transformers and machines needed to complete the project are set, awaiting the final switch over.
The Manager expressed his appreciation to their customers for their patience and maturity through the difficult times of low voltages and persistent outages (to allow for some of the lines to be strung). He also thanked God for His Guidance and Care that had brought the construction works to a near close. He assured that in the next week or two, following some minor finishing works, the new 161KV sub-station will be fully operational. He also thanked the Management of GRIDCo for the hard work done to accomplish the heavy and tedious task of building the primary sub-station that will go a long way to bring greater comfort & convenience to individuals and businesses and significantly, turn the local economy around.
The GRIDCo Supervising Engineer in charge of the works from Sunyani to Berekum, Mrs. Harriet Owusu Baneah also explained that, Berekum will soon have its own 161Kv sub-station so it will not have to depend on just a feeder from Sunyani as its source of power. She said the work had reached its final stages with some minor complementary works outstanding. The importance of her supervisory role in bringing the works to its virtual end cannot be over-emphasised.
The Corporate Communications Manager of NEDCo, Mr. Maxwell Kotoka also added that, immediately the new 161KV sub-station and the new lines become fully operational, electricity consumers in the catchment area of the project can be assured that the days of persistent outages, power fluctuations and low voltages are gone for good. He however cautioned that this good news notwithstanding, one could not rule out faults that can forcefully invoke outages, technically referred to as "unplanned outages". He explained further that some of these unplanned outages are caused by human activities such as indiscriminate tree felling and unauthorised phase changes and manipulation championed by residents/customers.
Accordingly, he advised the public to desist from such activities. He concluded by assuring all, that NEDCo was ever ready, willing and capable to serve all its customers within the catchment area and beyond in a manner that satisfies and even delights them. To this end, while thanking the public for their understanding and tolerance before and through the project, he called for continued support and cooperation from all.
