Ghana Squad for Afcon 2021: Shirt Numbers for Kudus, Issahaku, Partey and 25 others.
Ghana have released their squad numbers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals set to get underway in Cameroon from Sunday, January 9.
Head coach Milovan Rajevac did not sweat much in cutting down his 30-man provisional squad to 28 – AS Roma teen forward Felix Afena-Gyan turned down the senior national team invitation while Clermont Foot midfielder Salis Abdul Samed is ruled out due to an ankle injury.
After meeting Caf’s December 30 deadline for squad submission, the Ghana FA on Monday decided to reveal the numbers which the Black Stars players will wear during the 33rd edition of the Afcon.
Sharing the jersey numbers of each player a week to their opening match in Group C against Morocco, Ghana have listed Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus – whose inclusion looks to spark a club vs country row – to keep his favourite No. 20 shirt.
Captain Andre Ayew will wear the iconic No. 10 shirt with junior brother and Crystal Palace striker Jordan going with his usual No. 9 shirt.
Arsenal star Thomas Partey keeps his preferred No. 5.
2021 Under-20 Afcon best player Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has been handed the No. 7 shirt for Ghana while two other home-based players Maxwell Nii Abbey Quaye (Great Olympics) and David Abagna Sandan (RTU) will don Nos. 27 and 28 respectively.
Young goalkeeper Abdul Manaf Nurudeen takes the No. 1 with recent first-choice shot-stopper Jojo Wollacott has been assigned No. 16.
Ghana – who head into the Cameroon Afcon as four-time winners looking to break a 40-year title drought – will complete the group stage with games against Gabon and Comoros on January 14 and 18 respectively.
