10 MONTHS ON, ASUOKAW CHILDREN STILL RISK LIVES DAILY ON MAKESHIFT LOG BRIDGE.
Ten months after a presidential directive to urgently construct a bridge, schoolchildren in Asuokaw continue to face a serious daily danger, relying on a makeshift log bridge to cross a major stream on their way to class.
The community's frustration and fear are mounting as promised government action has yet to materialize.
The plight of Asuokaw gained national attention in February when a viral video showed two pupils carefully balancing on a fallen tree trunk to traverse the stream.
The disturbing footage prompted then-President John Dramani Mahama to instruct the 48 Engineers Regiment to immediately construct a proper bridge for the residents.
Following the directive, several high-level delegations, including Ministers of Defence and Roads, as well as the Eastern Regional Minister and local MPs, visited the site to assess the situation and offer assurances.
However, nearly 10 months later, residents report that absolutely nothing has started.
Speaking to Alrich24newsgh.blogspot.com news reporter Apelete Kofi Michel, community members expressed profound disappointment and doubt.
Residents warned that the unstable log crossing has already led to close calls. Several children have fallen into the stream in recent months while attempting to cross and had to be rescued by community members.
They add tht, even local authorities are unable to provide any tangible response.
Another resident, he also expressed doubts that the long -promised bridge would ever materialize. He don't believe this project is a priority for the government. They talk about big national projects, yet a small bridge has been left unattended for eight months, he said.
